It took me a while to do this one because of its theme.
This mother and baby must be poor, barely surviving each day.
Still, they have love. It might be the only thing they have left.
But if the only thing left is the essential thing in life, they are still happy.
Unlike the mother in this painting, there are mothers who cannot feel anything for their own children.
At least I believe so — though of course I never wish for it.
What I’m saying is not about abuse or abandonment.
They just can’t love, and sometimes even hate — because there’s no feeling there.
And they never think about how much that could affect their children.
Of course they don’t, because they don’t care.
What makes me feel how cruel the world is, is that when I speak about this kind of thing,
people blame me, not them. Because it’s about “mother” — the source of life. Mother.
What people tend to say is, “She loves you. She cared for you. She raised you. She fed you. Can’t you see that?”
I wonder why people never even try to see it this way:
“What kind of experience made this person think like that?”
